What is ductility?

01-12-2025
What is ductility?

Ductility is a key mechanical property when working with steel plates and sheets intended for pressure vessels, industrial tanks or boilers. In these environments, the material must withstand temperature changes, vibrations and continuous stresses without breaking. For this reason, understanding what ductility is and how it is measured helps choose the right sheet for each project.

What is ductility?

Ductility is the ability of a metal to deform without breaking when subjected to tension. A ductile material can stretch, bend or elongate before fracturing. This property is essential in installations that operate with internal pressure or thermal cycles, where the sheets must absorb stresses without failing.

The greater the ductility of a steel, the more safety and deformation margin it offers in extreme situations, such as occasional overpressure or accidental impacts.

Which metals are ductile?

Some of the best-known metals for their ductility are:

  • Carbon steel and special steels.
  • Copper and alloys such as brass or bronze.
  • Aluminium and its alloys.
  • Gold and silver.
  • Lead.
  • Nickel.

Each metal has a different level of elongation and behaviour under stress. In industrial applications, steel stands out for its balance between strength, ductility and cost.

The importance of ductility in steel

In the industrial sector, steel ductility is crucial for manufacturing components exposed to internal pressure, vibration or variable loads. The sheets used in tanks and boilers must deform slightly without cracking. This prevents structural failures and extends the service life of the equipment.

Ductility also allows:

  • Performing bending and forming without damaging the sheet.
  • Reducing the risk of cracking during welding.
  • Improving energy absorption in the event of impacts.
  • Facilitating repairs and on-site adjustments.

In pressure vessels, a sheet with low ductility can fracture suddenly. In contrast, a ductile sheet will deform first, giving visible warning signs before breaking.

Differences between ductility and malleability

Although sometimes confused, they are not the same. Both properties indicate the ability of the metal to deform, but they behave differently:

Property Description Type of stress
Ductility Ability to stretch or elongate without breaking. Tension (stretching).
Malleability Ability to deform under compression and be shaped. Compression (impact, pressure, bending).

A steel can be very ductile but not necessarily very malleable, and vice versa. In the case of sheets for boilers and tanks, both properties are valuable, although ductility usually carries more weight.

How to measure ductility and malleability

Mechanical properties are determined through standardised tests. The most commonly used are:

Tensile test

This is the most common test to measure ductility. A test specimen is stretched until it breaks and the final elongation is calculated. The higher the elongation percentage, the more ductile the material is.

Bending test

The sheet is bent to a specific angle to check for cracks. It is used to evaluate both malleability and behaviour during welding.

Impact tests

Tests such as the Charpy test measure the energy absorbed by the steel before fracturing. Although it does not measure ductility directly, it provides information about its performance under demanding conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Are all steels equally ductile?

No. Chemical composition, heat treatment and the rolling process directly affect ductility.

Why is ductility so important in pressure vessels?

Because it allows the sheet to deform before breaking, reducing the risk of catastrophic failures.

Does greater ductility mean lower strength?

Not always. Many special steels offer a balance between strength, yield limit and elongation.

Do welds affect ductility?

Yes. This is why it is essential to work with suitable sheets and apply controlled welding procedures.
